Last week, I revealed some small updates to our living room with you and one of those things was our new rug. Rugs are one of those things where unfortunately, you are most likely going to have to buy online since not many stores carry big ones. After my experience was such a hassle, I decided to write a post about it!
I eventually went with the Safavieh Anatolia Collection in 9×12 and we just love it. It is the absolute perfect size and color, plus the shedding has gone down since the first week it has been out. Clearly, Peanut is a fan. 😉
This was the second rug that I ordered though after a very trying ordeal with my first rug arriving damaged. After learning from my experience, here are 5 tips that will hopefully help you in your online rug shopping endeavors!
1. Measure your room.
This is so, so important, especially if you are buying a large rug. For main living room rugs, the safe size is 8×10 and above. You want each piece of furniture that the rug is surrounded by to have at least the front legs sitting on it, or the rug is too small. Grab your tape measurer and measure the room just to be safe!
The rule for rugs is generally when in doubt, get it a tad larger.
2. Make an inspiration board.
To make sure that your rug will go with the rest of the items in your room, make a quick collage! You would be surprised how this helps. Take pictures of pieces you already own and paste them together with the picture of the rug in question using a free photo editor software.
3. Look for reviews that include images of the rug in person.
When I was searching for a rug, I was surprised by the amount of rugs that had reviews saying the colors where completely off in person from the photo on the screen. It seemed as if 90% of the rugs I looked at were like this! If you look at the picture above and then click on the link for my rug, you will see what I mean.
Can’t find a review with a picture of the rug you are looking at? Google the name of it and you might be able to find one in the images section instead that some blogger posted. You never know.
4. Google the serial number to price match.
This pretty much goes with anything you buy online, but especially rugs. They can get seriously expensive, so do a quick search just to make sure you are getting the best deal!
5. When you get the rug, don’t open it all the way at first.
Since rugs are tricky to return, make sure you like it first. Just peel back a corner of the rug to check the colors to be safe before opening it all the way! If you end up having to return it, you will be glad you did this.
